Sherwood A. “Woody†Bakkum, 73, of La Crosse, WI., died Sunday, October 14, 2012, in St. Joseph’s Rehab Center, La Crosse, Wis. He was born in La Crosse, Wis., on Feb. 10, 1939, to Alvin and Ruth (Hanifl) Bakkum. He married Sharon (Clark) Weber on May 17, 1986, in Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, La Crosse, Wis.
Woody served our country in the US Army. He worked for the Cable Co. for over 30 years as an installer until his retirement. Woody had a host of friends in the Spooner area where he went for R & R. Woody loved fishing, hunting, woodworking and making lefse.
He is survived by his wife; Sharon of Onalaska, Wis., three daughters; Mary (Mike) Happel of Galesville, Wis., Theresa Bilskemper of Holmen, Wis., Linda (Greg) Devine of Onalaska, Wis., one son; Danny (Cindi) Weber of Dubuque, Iowa., 13 grandchildren; Cora (Dennis Crager) Moelter, Maria (Tony Belisle) Moelter, Alana Bilskemper, Christopher Leo Weber, Nathan Weber, Keith Kohl, Amber Kohl, Matt (Jess) Devine, Sarah (Ryan) Tackes, Mark (Stacy) Butenhoff, Jessica Devine, Matthew (Chrissy Embke) Weber and Ben Devine, four great-grandchildren; Braelyn, Mc Kenna, Cooper and Sophie. He is further survived by two sisters; Pat Gilberg of Spooner, Wis., and her children Dan, David, Barb and Deb; his other sister Jackie Eckdale of Anchorage, Alaska, and her children Mark and Shelly, and other special nieces, nephews, and his dear friend; Ed Becker.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Stafford and Rodderick, two brothers-in-law Rich Gilberg and Bob Eckdale, two nephews Rick and Brian.
Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM, Saturday, October 20, 2012, in Blaschke & Schneider Funeral Home – Nelson Chapel, 1007 Caledonia, St., La Crosse, Wis. Rev. Robert Wasserman will officiate with burial with military rites by the Roy L. Vingers American Legion Post 52, to be held in Oak Grove Cemetery, La Crosse, Wis. Family and friends may call from 10:00 AM until the time of services in the Nelson Chapel on Saturday.
The family cannot thank the staff at St. Joseph Rehab Center enough for the care Woody received during his stay.
