Robert ‘Bob’ G. Schaefer
Robert “Bob” G. Schaefer, age 89, of La Crosse, WI, died Sunday, December 25, 2016 in La Crosse. He was born in La Crosse on April 13, 1927, to Peter and Anna (Kreutz) Schaefer. Bob married Margaret Schmitt on June 9, 1951, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church.
After serving in the U.S. Navy in World War II, he worked at the US Postal Service for 40 years. Bob enjoyed fishing, duck hunting, traveling, polka music, tennis, going to church dinners, and volunteering at Hillview Nursing Home and Benedictine Manor where he played euchre and pool. He was a longtime member of Blessed Sacrament parish. Bob is remembered by many for his love of family, his generosity and kindness.
He is survived by his wife Margaret, two daughters, Mary Ann (Bruce Twomey) Affeldt, of Brookfield, WI., and Patricia Schaefer-Burris of West Valley City, UT.; one son, John (Bonnie) Schaefer, of Milwaukee; and three grandchildren, Andrew Schaefer of Chicago, Ill., Sarah Schaefer, of Minneapolis, MN., and AnnMarie Burris of West Valley City, UT.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother James (Theola) Schaefer, and his hunting buddy, Gunner.
Special thanks to his cousin, Rose Kreutz, to Dr. Mary Bassing for her care, and to the caring staffs at Eagle Crest South, Hillview, and Gundersen Hospice who made his final years comfortable.
Celebration of Bob’s Life will be at Blessed Sacrament Parish on Saturday, January 14, 2017, The funeral mass will be held at 10:30 AM, at Blessed Sacrament Church, 130 Losey Blvd., La Crosse, WI. Family and friends may call at the church from 9:00 AM until the time of Mass. Rev. Peter Raj will officiate with entombment to be held in St. Francis of Assisi Mausoleum in the Catholic Cemetery.
Memorials to Aquinas Catholic Schools Foundation are preferred rather than flowers.
